Doula Birth Support

What Is A Doula?

A Doula (pronounced ‘doo-la’) offers emotional and physical support to a woman and her partner before, during and after childbirth. A doula (also known as a birth attendant) believes in ‘mothering the mother’, enabling a woman to have the most satisfying experience that she can, from pregnancy and into motherhood. This type of support allows the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience too.

Doulas are trained and experienced in childbirth and are usually mothers themselves. They have a good knowledge and awareness of female physiology, but a doula does not support the mother in a medical role – that is the job of the midwife or doctor. She works on keeping birth normal and empowering, and should the birth become complicated and require medical assistance, a doula will still remain by your side and help in any way she can. She will not make the decisions for those she supports, but she assists them through the decision making process and provides balanced information so the couple can make their own choices.

Many women consider doulas to be a must for those giving birth in a hospital, due to the over-medicalisation of birth – unnecessary inductions have skyrocketed and are partly to blame for the many babies now born by caesarean section.

Four Trimesters was founded by Dr. Amy Chin-Atkins in December 2002 and is co-owned and operated by Ginny Phang – who is a certified DONA Birth & Postpartum Doula & Trainer, Childbirth Educator, 5-PATH Hypnotherapist, Master NeuroStrategist, HypnoFertility and HypnoBirthing Practitioner & Trainer – affiliated with the HypnoBirthing Institute USA, Eastburn Hypnotherapy Center, SRI Coaching and Doulas of North America, the world’s largest doula organization.

She and her team of Birth & Postpartum Doulas, doula with a warm heart because birth matters, with the philosophy of empowering parents to have their best birth possible regardless of the outcome.

Every client is assigned two Doulas, as they work as a team to care for the parents through pregnancy, birth and into the fourth trimester!

She is also a regular speaker for prenatal yoga teacher training certification courses.

Ginny is a single mother to a 10 year old son who is both the compass and the anchor of her life. A dedicated mother, she breastfed her son until he was 6.5 years old and homeschooled him for almost 2 years.

In 2003, Ginny co-founded Flyin’ Solo, Singapore’s first and only support group for unmarried mothers in Singapore. The group has since disbanded and functions as an email support group.

The media – from print to screen – has spotlighted Ginny and her services time and again. She has been featured in over a hundred publications, including dailies like The Straits Times and magazines like Today’s Parents, Singapore Women’s Weekly and Motherhood. Being a Doula is truly Ginny’s life’s calling – much more than a profession, it’s a real passion. Unlike other practitioners in this field, she uses her own journey to support other women through this significant continuum of womanhood. It is an intimate voyage, with no space for judgment but plenty of room for body, mind and soul support at every step of the way.
